-Empowering Sustainable Coastal Zone Management.
The Norwegian coastline is a treasure trove of ecological diversity, natural resources, and cultural heritage. Stretching across thousands of kilometers, it is home to vibrant ecosystems, iconic landscapes, and communities whose livelihoods and traditions are deeply intertwined with the sea. However, this rich coastal environment faces increasing pressures from human activities and climate change, underscoring the need for sustainable management practices that balance conservation with responsible use.
Funded by the Research Council of Norway and led by the Marine Research Institute, CoastSupport brings together a multidisciplinary team of researchers, local authorities, and industry partners. The project group includes the Lofoten Council (representing the municipalities of Vågan, Vestvågøy, Flakstad, Moskenes, Værøy, and Røst), the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA), Nordlandsforskning, UiT, Marine Research Institute, and SKREI. Together, we aim to address the complex challenges of balancing economic development with ecological sustainability.

At the heart of CoastSupport is the integration of scientific data with local and traditional knowledge. Through interviews, participatory workshops, and digital PPGIS platforms, the project seeks to incorporate the lived experiences of coastal communities into decision-making processes. This approach ensures that management strategies reflect both cutting-edge research and the real-world insights of those who depend on coastal resources.
The project’s activities include:
- Mapping and synthesizing knowledge about natural resources and the pressure they face.
- Developing digital tools to visualize cumulative impacts and assess the consequences of different management scenarios.
- Testing and refining these tools in collaboration with municipalities and industry stakeholders in Lofoten, the project’s pilot area.
- Sharing results and methodologies openly to enable broader adoption across Norway and beyond.
By focusing on Lofoten’s unique coastal zone as a pilot area, CoastSupport aims to create scalable solutions that can be applied to other regions. The project’s goal is to empower municipalities, businesses, and residents with the tools they need to make informed decisions that balance economic growth with preservation of natural and cultural values.
CoastSupport is more than a research project. It is a collaborative effort to build knowledge and tools our coast needs to thrive in the face of growing challenges. By combining science, technology, and local knowledge, the project is paving the way for a more sustainable future for Norway’s coastal communities.
